TIF Procedure

Interventional Endoscopy Associates PLLC

Gastroenterology and Endoscopy located in Peoria, AZ & Scottsdale, AZ

Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF) is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure designed to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Performed entirely through the mouth without external incisions, TIF reconstructs the valve between the esophagus and stomach to restore its natural anti-reflux barrier. This approach reduces or eliminates reflux symptoms, decreases the need for long-term medications, and offers quicker recovery compared to traditional surgical fundoplication

What is a TIF procedure?

Transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) is an endoscopic procedure used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) by reconstructing the valve between the esophagus and stomach. This is performed using a device that fits over a flexible tube which is then passed through the mouth and into the stomach without making any incisions. This device allows the physician to deploy small fasteners that reshape and strengthen the anti-reflux valve.  The TIF procedure significantly reduces the reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus and helps control the symptoms of acid reflux.

Which patients are potential candidates for TIF?

Patients with symptoms of GERD that are not well controlled with medications and patients who want to come off these medications are potential candidates for TIF.

Does having a hiatal hernia affect my candidacy for TIF?

Most patients with a hiatal hernia will require a hiatal hernia repair in addition to fundoplication. The fundoplication can be performed as a TIF in combination with the hiatal hernia repair.

What does the evaluation for TIF involve?

The evaluation for a TIF procedure involves an upper endoscopy. Depending on the nature of your symptoms and the findings on the upper endoscopy, you may need further testing.  These tests include measuring acid levels in the esophagus and/or evaluating the esophagus for any abnormalities in contractility. Both tests can potentially be completed at the same time as your upper endoscopy.

What is the recovery like after undergoing the TIF procedure?

Patients are usually admitted into the hospital overnight after the TIF procedure and the majority can go home the following day.  A modified diet and some activity limitations will need to be followed for approximately 6 weeks following the procedure.
